UAE becomes first country to cross 70pc AI adoption rate globally
Microsoft report highlights rapid nationwide digital transformation
DUBAI – The United Arab Emirates has strengthened its position as a global technology leader after ranking first worldwide in artificial intelligence adoption, according to the Microsoft AI Diffusion Report for the first quarter of 2026.
Published by the Microsoft AI Economy Institute, the report found that AI adoption among the UAE’s working-age population reached 70.1 per cent, making it the first economy in the world to cross the 70 percent threshold. The figure marks a steady rise from 59.4 percent before climbing to 64 percent and now reaching its latest record level.
The findings place the UAE significantly ahead of the global average of 17.8 percent, while large parts of the world remain below the 10 percent mark.
Digital growth
The report highlighted how artificial intelligence has become increasingly embedded in daily work and learning methods across the country. It noted that the UAE’s progress has been supported by strong foundations focused on resilience, operational continuity and responsible technological growth.
The latest rankings also reinforce the country’s standing among the world’s most advanced economies, reflecting years of investment in digital capabilities, innovation ecosystems and future-focused infrastructure.
Amr Kamel, General Manager of Microsoft UAE, said the ranking reflected long-term efforts by the government, businesses and individuals to create the right environment for AI development and adoption.
Global divide
At the international level, Microsoft’s AI Adoption Index pointed to a widening gap between higher-income economies and developing regions. According to the report, AI adoption across the Global North is growing at more than twice the pace seen in other parts of the world.
The report identified digital connectivity, infrastructure limitations and insufficient AI capabilities in local languages among the main barriers slowing wider adoption globally. It added that sustained and carefully planned investment remains the most effective way to improve equitable access to artificial intelligence technologies.
